Type

A9tj DEV inox U56.

UIC number Revision date
51 87 19-87 004-1 2 16.6.75

164 g; 118 g after removing the ballast (NEM: 115 to 150 g).

The interior is uniformly painted in white, but there are now inserted seats painted red. Unfortunately, there are four places abreast, whereas there should be only three! This is all the more stupid since there are the proper seats in the A5rt released under the same reference! Otherwise, there is little change compared to previous productions.

The wheels, very shiny, have a diameter of 10.4 mm, for 10.6 to scale, and a distance between tips of 25 mm. The wheel back-to-back distance is 14.2 mm, not compliant with the NEM 310 (14.5 ± 0.1).

The bogies and the chassis are fitted with dynamo, brake linkage, air tank and cylinder.

The car is too high by at least 0.5 mm. Beware of the bosses on the bogies, under the drawbars, which serve to limit the rotation of the bogies, and which could lean against the chassis.

The pivoting of the bogies is bad; it will be improved by shortening the pivots.

Spring buffers are still too small and can easily get crooked.

Modifications

  • Chassis lowered by 0.5 mm by milling the bogie pivots. Coupling boxes shortened by 0.6 mm.
  • 2-point suspension wedges.
  • Lighting: current pickup by wires wrapped on the axles; control by latching reed; home made lighting strip.
  • Floor and wall decoration by self-adhesive photo paper.
  • A line of seats was cut in half to re-establish the 3-seater chart.
  • Ballast (50 g) removed.

It is one of the four A9 DEV U56 cars with central corridor, No. 51 87 19-87 001 to 004 put into service from 1957 for the Paris-Lille fast trains (source Le Train, Les archives de la DEV, p. 83). The original bogies are Y20H, often replaced later by Y24Z.
